What is it about: The University Farms Greenhouses are used extensively for both research and teaching and provide facilities and support for production of agronomic, horticultural, ornamental, and forest plants. The greenhouses are becoming very cramped which is negatively impacting our teaching and research missions. Some of the tensions could be addressed with upgrades to the existing spaces with new technology lighting. We are trying to raise $3,000 for this project, but more money means more lights!
Where will the money be used: To purchase light emitting diodes, or LED, lights for the greenhouses at SIU farms. LED lights are engineered specifically to emit photosynthetic active radiation over traditional high intensity discharge lights and save up to 50% of energy costs. We will be able to use these lights to enhance our ability to create hydroponic systems and vertical gardens (which would allow us to produce more food with less space).
Who benefits: Replacing these lights would save the university money, help fulfill our sustainability initiatives, and most importantly expose our students to the latest technology.
A gift of $10 will help provide a portion of the costs to purchase LED lights to benefit the University Farms Greenhouses.
A gift of $25 will help provide a portion of the costs to purchase LED lights to benefit the University Farms Greenhouses.
A gift of $50 will help provide a portion of the costs to purchase LED lights to benefit the University Farms Greenhouses.
A gift of $100 will help provide a portion of the costs to purchase LED lights to benefit the University Farms Greenhouses.
